Christine Goldbeck
It has been an interesting ride so far. I came from nothing, really. The good thing about coming from nothing is that when you have nothing to lose, you also have nothing to fear. Despite that I now have a little more than nothing, I do try to live under the “no fear” policy. I take risks that help me to put my interpretations of experiences and sights into art that I hope viewers will find interesting and unique.
As a photographer, I work a lot with nature, flowers, and industrial and farm ruins. I also like to use my technical skills with cameras and my creative abilities as an artist to produce abstract photographs. It is painting with light. I work to capture or to create motion, through natural means such as wind or moving water and through my own action such as panning or swiping. The goal is to express movement, reflection, texture and vivid color in photographs using an overall style similar to the Impressionist painters. Some of the photographs show form. Others suggest it, thereby allowing viewers to make what they wish of what they see in the images.
Most of my paintings are layered stories and contain multiple meanings because we are multi-layered products of many elements. Life is about sensorial pleasures and mystery. I work with texture and symbol so that you may spend time wondering about what I am sharing or find your own stories in the work. I work in multiple traditional mediums and I also make digital paintings.
My gallery, Arts on Union, is adjacent to my art studio on the first floor of our house in Middletown, Central Pennsylvania. In the gallery, in addition to showing my photographs and paintings, I curate themed shows and, host guest artists. I also work with student artists to help them develop creative, technical and business skills.
In addition to making art, I love biking, hiking and running and I am a voracious reader. I collect the work of early 20th century American authors and I rescue old books and make them into art. I also lead book discussions for the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and libraries throughout the state.
A former national and state award-winning photojournalist, I hold a Master of Fine Arts-Interdisciplinary Arts (MFA-IA) Degree. I exhibit widely in group shows and in nontraditional locations. In 2007, I had a solo show in the Pennsylvania Capitol East Wing Rotunda and in July 2010, I exhibited solo at WITF Public Media Center in Harrisburg. I am a Juried Member (Photography) of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen.
