Allison Ostertag
My goal in photographing local nature preserves, gardens, arboretums, wildlife refuges and green spaces is to draw people into the world under the trees and invite them to look more closely at the ground, the leaves, the bark, the insects; the whole microcosm swirling around them. Photography has become a form of scientific inquiry for me as much as a form of artistic self expression.
I see beauty in the natural design of the edge of turkey tail fungus on a dead tree and the cacophonous canopy of leaves above the trees. I hope the more people see the beauty, the more likely it is they will visit these places themselves, share them with their families and preserve them for the future.
My photographs are unmanipulated digital and square format film, meaning I don’t use photographic software to enhance the images. I prefer to share what is there to be seen with the naked eye.
